Grok 4.3 vs Gemini Ultra 2: The Million-Token Showdown
When xAI shipped Grok 4.3 earlier this month, the announcement was easy to miss. No livestream, no viral demo, no Grok-authored novel. Just a quiet API update and a changelog entry. But the numbers tell a very different story. Grok 4.3 is the most consequential release from xAI since the original Grok - and it reshapes how we think about the million-token context tier.
The Spec Leap
Let's start with what changed. Grok 3 (December 2025) offered a 131K context window, $5 per million input tokens, and a 8.2 LMRank score. Six months later, Grok 4.3 delivers a 1 million token context window, $1.25 per million input, and an 8.5 score. That's a 7.6x context expansion, a 75% input price cut, a 83% output price cut (from $15 to $2.50), and a 0.3-point quality jump.
No other model on the LMRank leaderboard has improved on all three axes - context, price, and score - simultaneously in a single generation. Not GPT-5 to GPT-5.5. Not Claude Opus 4.5 to 4.7. The Grok 3 to Grok 4.3 leap is unprecedented in its breadth.
The Only Other Million-Token Player
Until May, Gemini Ultra 2 had the million-token market to itself. Google's flagship launched in January 2026 with a 9.2 LMRank score, native multimodal video understanding, and deep Google Workspace integration. It was - and still is - the best multimodal model money can buy.
But Gemini Ultra 2 costs $10 per million input and $40 per million output. Grok 4.3 undercuts that by 87.5% on input and 93.75% on output. For a million-token prompt with a 200K-token response, the bill drops from roughly $18,000 to roughly $1,750. Same context ceiling. Different universe of cost.
The score gap is 0.7 points: 9.2 for Gemini Ultra 2 versus 8.5 for Grok 4.3. On the LMRank scale, that's the difference between "exceptional" and "very strong." But when the price gap is 90%, the value proposition gets interesting fast.
What You Give Up
The savings aren't free. Gemini Ultra 2 still leads on three fronts that matter for specific workflows:
- Multimodal depth: Native video understanding, YouTube integration, and image reasoning are Gemini's moat. Grok 4.3 handles images but doesn't match Google's pipeline.
- Ecosystem lock-in: If your stack runs on Google Cloud, Vertex AI, or Workspace, Gemini Ultra 2 is frictionless. Grok 4.3 requires API plumbing.
- Third-party integrations: Grok's API ecosystem is thin. Most frameworks and agent platforms default to OpenAI or Anthropic, with Gemini as a distant third. xAI is fourth at best.
xAI also acknowledges "alignment can produce inconsistent refusals" in Grok 4.3 - a polite way of saying the safety tuning is still a work in progress. For research and internal tools, that's often fine. For customer-facing products, it adds risk.
When to Pick Which
The decision breaks cleanly by use case:
- Choose Gemini Ultra 2 when you need the absolute best multimodal performance, native video analysis, or tight Google Cloud integration. The 0.7-point quality edge and ecosystem depth justify the premium for mission-critical deployments.
- Choose Grok 4.3 when your workload is text-heavy, your context needs are extreme (legal docs, research papers, codebase analysis), and your budget is real. At $2.50 per million output tokens, you can afford to be generous with prompts.
The Bigger Picture
Grok 4.3 does something more important than beating Gemini on price. It proves that massive context windows don't have to be luxury features. Google's 1M context is a flagship exclusive. xAI just democratized it.
If DeepSeek, Qwen, or Meta follow suit - and history says they will - the "1M token club" could go from two models to six by autumn. That would force pricing adjustments across the board. Gemini Ultra 2 at $40 output won't survive in a world where three open-weight models offer 1M context at under $5.
For now, Grok 4.3 is the best value in long-context AI. Not the best model. The best deal. And on the LMRank leaderboard, that distinction matters just as much as the top score.
